Terms of Service
These are the rules for using Baton. We have tried to keep them short, clear and fair to both developers and the clients they build for.
1. Agreement
These terms are an agreement between you and Samuel Adefila, who operates Baton (“Baton”, “we”, “us”). By creating an account or using Baton you agree to them and to our Privacy Policy. If you use Baton for a business, you confirm you can bind that business.
You must be 18 or older.
2. What Baton does
Baton lets a developer register a website, detect how it was built, and give the site’s owner a visual editor to change text, images, links and icons. Edits are saved as drafts, can be published, and every published version can be rolled back. For WordPress sites, edits can be written into the site itself. For other sites, a small script applies published edits when a page loads.
Baton is in early access. Features may change, and some things will not work as you expect. We will do our best, and we ask you to tell us when something is wrong.
3. Your account
- Give us accurate information and keep it up to date.
- Keep your password and recovery codes private. We strongly recommend turning on two-step login.
- You are responsible for what happens under your account, including what people you invite do.
- Tell us straight away at samuel@adefilasamuel.com if you think someone else has accessed your account.
4. Owners, developers and editors
Each site has people in three roles. The owner is the client and controls who has access. A developer sets the site up and can edit content. An editor can change content only. When a developer hands a site over, the new owner takes control and the developer remains a developer.
You may add a website to Baton only if you built it, own it, or have the owner’s permission. If you add a site for a client, you are responsible for getting their agreement to use Baton on it. If two people dispute who controls a site, we may ask for proof and may restrict access while it is resolved, but we do not decide ownership disputes.
5. Your content
You keep all rights in your websites and everything you write, upload or publish through Baton. You give us a limited licence to store, process, display and transmit that content, and to write it to your site, but only as needed to run the service for you.
You are responsible for your content. It must be lawful, and you must have the right to use everything you upload. You are also responsible for keeping your own backups, especially before connecting WordPress, because Baton changes the content of the pages you tell it to change.
6. Installing the Baton script
Install the script only on sites you are authorised to change. It is small, loads after the page, and is built not to alter page titles, descriptions, canonical links or structured data. Edits made through the script appear after a page loads, so a search engine or tool that does not run scripts may see the original text. Edits written into WordPress are saved in the site itself.
If you stop using Baton, remove the script first. Once your account or the site is removed, edits that were applied by the script stop appearing on the site.
7. What you must not do
- Break the law, or publish content that is illegal, defamatory, infringing, hateful, or that deceives people.
- Add a site you have no right to, or impersonate another person or business.
- Use Baton to spread malware, to phish, to scan or attack other systems, or to reach internal or private addresses.
- Try to break, probe or overload Baton, bypass its limits, or access data that is not yours.
- Use automated means to create accounts or collect data from Baton.
- Resell or sublicense Baton without our written agreement.
We may remove content or suspend access to stop any of this.
8. Other companies’ services
Baton works with websites and platforms we do not control, such as WordPress, hosting companies and your domain provider. Their own terms apply to you, and we are not responsible for their services or for changes they make.
9. Availability and changes
We aim to keep Baton running but do not promise uninterrupted service. We may change, pause or stop features, with notice where we reasonably can. If Baton is unavailable, a site that uses the script still loads normally, but visitors may see the original text instead of recent edits.
10. Fees
Baton is free during early access. If we introduce charges, we will tell you in advance, you will not be charged unless you agree, and we will give you reasonable time to export your content or leave.
11. Ending this agreement
You can stop using Baton at any time. Site owners can delete a site from its page. To close your account, email us from your account address.
We may suspend or end your access if you break these terms, if you put others or Baton at risk, or if the law requires it. Where we reasonably can, we will tell you why and give you a chance to fix the problem first. Sections that by their nature should survive (such as liability, ownership and disputes) continue after the agreement ends.
12. Our property
The Baton name, logo, design and software belong to us. These terms do not give you any right to them beyond using the service. If you send us feedback, we may use it freely without owing you anything.
13. No guarantees
Baton is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the fullest extent the law allows, we give no warranties of any kind, including that it will be error-free, always available, or suitable for a particular purpose, or that it will affect your search rankings in any particular way.
14. Limit of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for lost profits, revenue, data or goodwill, however caused. Our total liability for all claims connected with Baton is limited to the greater of what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim and US$100.
Nothing in these terms limits liability that the law does not allow to be limited, such as for fraud or for death or personal injury caused by negligence.
15. If something you did causes a claim
You will cover our reasonable costs if a third party makes a claim against us because of your content, because you added a site you had no right to, or because you broke these terms.
16. Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. We would like to resolve any problem informally first, so please contact us before starting a claim. If we cannot, the courts of Nigeria have jurisdiction, except where the law of your country gives you the right to go elsewhere.
17. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. For material changes we will give you at least 14 days’ notice by email or in the app. If you keep using Baton after the change takes effect, you accept the new terms. If you do not agree, you can stop using Baton.
